Week 1
What a brilliant and busy first week the children have had! The Year 2 team are so proud of how they have come back ready to learn!
The children have started learning about place value in Maths. We know that the number 56 for example, is made of 5 groups of ten and 6 more.
In English we have been looking at instructions and why they are important! We read a text called 'how to feed your own pet dragon!
Finally we have been doing lots of fun topic work in the afternoons but Geography stood out this week as we explored the school grounds and created a map of the places we saw!
Week 2
In Maths we have been looking at place value again! This week we practiced 'partitioning' numbers within 100. Splitting numbers into two groups that add up to the original!
In English we have planed to write class instruction on how to feed a pet shark! We have some interesting steps and gross ingredients!
Finally, once again we have been working hard with our topic. This week we had fun taste testing ingredients to put in some heathy wraps in a few weeks time! The children were very brave in trying ingredients, even if they didn't think they would like them!
Week 3
In English this week, we continued our learning about instructions. We know that to give instructions we need to use imperative (bossy) verbs like ‘stop, put, give.’ The children chose an animal they wanted to write instructions to feed and planned and wrote these. We had tigers, snakes, bunnies and many more!
In Maths, we focussed on tens and ones on a number line. We used our knowledge of our 10 times tables and counting in 1s to help us find missing numbers.

We designed our wraps in DT, ready to make next week.
On Friday, we had ‘Carrot Day’! This was to celebrate Harvest and create some carrot- themed decorations for Ely Cathedral’s harvest display. The children enjoyed writing carrot acrostic poems, measuring carrots and completing some carrot sewing in the afternoon.
Week 4
This week, in English, we started looking at a new text, ‘The Snow Queen.’ The children were very good at coming up with actions for each part of the story. We also began describing the setting using exciting adjectives.
In Maths, we looked at our 2-, 5- and 10-times tables. We know that all numbers in the 2 times tables are even, all number in the 5 times tables end in 5 and 0 and in the 10 times tables, they always end in a 0.
The children were very excited in DT to finally be making their wraps! They used the plans we completed last week, and they chose from the ingredients we taste-tested. The children enjoyed eating these at the end of the lesson!
Week 5
We continued our learning about ‘The Snow Queen’ in English this week.
We focussed on skills that can help us write interesting setting descriptions like, similes, adjectives, adverbs and sentences of 3. The children described
a picture using those techniques.

In Maths, we revisited number bonds to 10. The children used 10s frames and counters to help them notice which numbers add together to make 10.
In Music, the children have been getting better and better at playing their recorders along to a music track. They have learned how to play the notes A, C, B and G.
In DT, we reviewed our wraps that we made last week. Most of the children’s reviews were positive ones!
Week 6
We continued our learning about setting descriptions and the children had a go at writing some descriptions for some different pictures. They were very good at coming up with interesting similes to describe parts of the settings.
In Maths we looked at number bonds to 100. We noticed that they follow the same pattern as number bonds to 10. E.g. – 1 +9 = 10 and 10 + 90 = 100
In Science, we designed a ‘healthy plate’, this included food from each food group, carbohydrates, protein, dairy, fruit and vegetables, fats.
In Art, we had a go at recreating our own versions of Klee’s ‘Three Houses.’ We noticed that different geometric shapes were used in his art so, we tried to replicate this in our own.

Week 7
In English we completed our learning about setting descriptions by doing our own, independent innovation. The children chose a setting and planned, then wrote about it using the writing techniques we had focussed on.
In Maths, we looked at adding to the next 10. To do this, we needed to use our number bonds knowledge to support us.
The children painted their ‘Three Houses’ drawings from last week. We used one colour and added white to make it lighter and black to make it darker.
We are so impressed with how hard the children worked this half term and can’t wait for another half term of learning!
Week 1
Welcome back! The children have come back from half term positive and ready to learn.
In English we introduced a new text, ‘Cinderella.’ Many of the children were already familiar with it. We made story maps to retell the story to make sure we were confident in the order of events.
In Maths, we began looking at adding and subtracting across 10. The children found it useful to use 100 squares and base 10 to help them answer questions.
In Science, we have started looking at whether things around school are living, inanimate and dead. The children noticed that the trees are living, the whiteboard is inanimate and the leaves on the ground are dead.
We began planning our Ferris wheel designs in DT which we will be making in a couple of weeks. In Art we mixed primary colours to make secondary colours.
Week 2
Our learning about ‘Cinderella’ continued in English this week. The focus was on describing the characters from the story using adjectives and adverbs.
In Maths, we have looked at adding 10s. We noticed that when we add 10s to a number, the 1s stay the same, only the 10s change.
In DT, we continued looking at Ferris wheel designs and talked about what materials would be suitable for each part to be made from.
In Art, we will be using our painting from last week and cutting out geometric and organic shapes to replicate Matisse’s art work.

Week 3
We continued our learning about 'Cinderella' in English this week. We worked together as a class to come up with an innovated version of the story. The children came up with some great ideas and we ended up with changing the wicked step-mother to an evil step-father, a magical dragon instead of a fairy godmother and a fisherman instead of Prince Charming!
In Maths, the children were introduced to 2D shapes. We were very impressed with their prior knowledge of different 2D shapes. We introduced the word 'vertex' which is a mathematical term for corner. The children practised counting the vertices on each 2D shape.
The children have enjoyed beginning their History learning, all about the Romans. They found it particularly funny to find out how Romans used the toilet!
In DT, the children have started to design their own Ferris Wheels. We talked about how we would make this move, using axels and wheels in their designs.
Week 4
In English this week, the children independently innovated their own version of Cinderella. They came up with creative changes for the characters and setting. We were so impressed with the creativity of the children and how hard they worked!
In Maths, we introduced 3D shapes. Many of the children were already able to name many 3D shapes and we enjoyed listening to this 3D shape song to support understanding!

In Music, we have started learning a Christmas song - ;Ho, Ho, Ho' and everyone's favourite part is the rap!
In PHSE, we talked about being unique and how this makes us special. We all participated in circle time where we told the rest of our class what makes us unique! The book 'All are Welcome' is great to encourage children to accept their individuality.
We loved having 'Crazy Hair Day' and Christmas decoration morning this week!
Week 5
We have completed our learning about Cinderella so, introduced a new topic in English this week. We have been focussing on expanded noun phrases, these are written as 'adjective, adjective, noun.' The children wrote winter themed acrostic poems, incorporating expanded noun phrases.
In Maths, we continued looking at 3D shapes and focussed on counting the faces on each shape. We used physical 3D shapes to support understanding.
In Science, we have been looking at food chains. The children learnt some new key words; a 'producer' creates its own energy and does not need to gain energy through eating other living things, a 'consumer' gets its energy from another living thing.
The children are working so hard on practising their Christmassy songs ready for the KS1 Sing-a-long next Friday. We can't wait to show you!
Week 6
Thank you so much for coming to watch our lovely singing this week! The children particularly enjoyed showing you their recorder playing!
In English this week, we looked closely at question marks and exclamation marks. We learnt that a question mark always needs to go at the end of a question and, the children practised this through writing questions for Santa! We talked about exclamation marks being used to show emotion or surprise.
In Maths, the children worked on sorting 2D and 3D shapes based on their characteristics, we thought about these questions; Do they have 6 or more vertices? Do they have curved surfaces? Are they flat?
In DT the children completed making their Ferris Wheels. We had some very exciting designs with bright colours and everyone's Ferris Wheel could move!
We very much enjoyed having our Christmas lunch together on Thursday. The food was delicious and we loved all having lunch together and wearing paper crowns!
Week 7
Wow! We can't believe that is a whole term completed in Year 2! Thank you for your continued support and we hope you all have a restful break,
In English this week, we revisited writing techniques from across the term so that the children felt really secure. We wrote setting descriptions for a Christmas picture, letters to Father Christmas and, designed an elf!
In Maths, we completed our learning about shape and the children were able to show us how much they had learnt this half term through an end of unit assessment.
In the afternoons this week, we have enjoyed completing many Christmas crafts. We made oil pastel pictures on black paper, moving elf decorations and door signs! The children loved being creative and using lots of glitter!
We can't wait for more fantastic learning in 2026!
