Summer

Welcome to Year 2's Summer Class Page!
Below you will find the Knowledge Organisers for the subjects we are focussing on in Summer 1.
Summer 1
Week 1

We have had a fantastic first week back in Year 2!

On Mondays this term, we are lucky to be doing dance in PE with a dance teacher. The children thoroughly enjoyed learning a dance to 'Friend like Me' from Aladdin.

On Tuesday, we had a visit from 'Past Productions' who delivered a brilliant Tudor Workshop for the children. it included, jousting, Tudor dancing, artefact handling, shield making and, some re-enactments of Tudor events involving some of the children as the characters!

In English this week, the children have written recounts of some of their favourite moments from the Easter holidays.

In Maths, we have introduced the children to fractions. They have been learning that a fraction is a part of a whole, you can have equal and unequal parts and, finding a half of a shape.

Science this term is focussing around Materials. The children were identifying the materials they could see around the classroom and why they thought the objects were made from these materials.

The children identified the countries in Northern Europe in Geography this week. We discussed how they are colder than countries in Southern Europe because they are further away from the equator.
Week 2

Another brilliant week of learning for Year 2!

In Maths, we have introduced the children to quarters. The children began to recognise that in 1/4, there are four parts and we are counting one of those four parts.

In English, we continued looking at 'The Day the Crayons Quit.' The children wrote sentences about how Duncan, the main character was feeling, making sure to include exclamation and question marks to make their writing more interesting.

This week, in Science, the children discovered that Velcro was invented by a man called George De Mestral. The children drew diagrams of a microscopic view of Velcro, noticing the hooks and loops.

In PHSE, we talked about the importance of not sharing personal information with strangers to ensure we stay safe. We talked about people who can help us and calling 999 if there is an emergency.
Week 3

Year 2 thoroughly enjoyed Science Week!
Our week began with an assembly from 'Mad Science' and they showed us some exciting experiments using static electricity.

We participated in lots of experiments this week and the children were encouraged to be curious just like real Scientists.

On Monday, we completed a volcano experiment using vinegar and bicarbonate of soda and planned a salt crystal experiment to observe for the rest of the week. We also tried making an egg bouncy by leaving it in vinegar and melting ice cubes containing Lego! The children's favourite experiment was protecting a raw egg from being dropped from a height. They worked in teams to make a parachute to keep it safe when it is dropped. Most of the eggs survived!

In English, the children were shocked to discover the crayons had stolen Tulip's chairs and Foxgloves' coloured pencils! They planned and wrote letters to convince the crayons to return them - luckily their letters were so brilliant and it worked!

In Maths, we continued fractions and we started looking at 'Non unit' fractions. These are fractions that do not have a 1 at the top.

The children have enjoyed drawing their own Labyrinth mazes in Art, based around 'Thesis and the Minotaur.' They are going to be drawing Minotaurs to go with them next week.
Week 4

A short but busy week this week!

The children impressed us with their ideas for an innovated version of 'The Owl who was afraid of the dark' in English. We had the owl being changed to different animals such as, snakes, hamsters, jellyfish and tigers! The children will continue writing their stories next week.

In Maths, our fractions topic came to an end and we revisited quarters, halves, thirds alongside non-unit fractions.

The children completed some very impressive chalk and charcoal drawings in Art. They focussed on imitating the Minotaur paintings by Sarah Young and Picasso.

In PHSE,. we focussed on Road Safety. The children came up with some great tips on keeping safe when near a road. They talked about waiting for the green man at traffic lights, walking instead of running and holding an adult's hand.

The children loved creating their own stop-motion animations in Computing using IPads. They knew to make tiny movements with the parts they were using to ensure it looks like it's moving in real life when played all together.

A reminder that spellings go home every Friday, if your child brings them back to their teacher, they will receive a sticker!
Week 5

The children loved starting their week with another dance session in PE on Monday morning!

Thank you to those parents who joined us for Art on Tuesday, it was lovely for the children to show you their painting skills while doing your portraits!

In English this week, the children continued writing their innovated versions of 'The Owl Who was Afraid of the Dark.' We then talked about adding the suffixes 'full' and 'less' to words.

We have introduced the children to telling the time in Maths this week. We have focussed on O'Clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to. The children have been using their fractions knowledge to help them do this.

We enjoyed Science this week, experimenting with a microscope. The children were fascinated to see what different materials looked like under a microscope!

In DT, the children have practised a running stitch to sew together the two pieces of their fabric pouches. We will be completing these by adding some decorations next week.
