Week 6
This week in Lily class, we have been finding out how people all around the world celebrate The Chinese Lunar New Year. From playing with and then tasting noodles, prawn crackers and fortune cookies to learning about how the year's were named, we have used all our senses to explore this festival. We learnt that red and gold are lucky colours; the children are given money in special red money wallets; dragon dances scare away the bad before the new year starts and many people celebrate with family and friends and have fireworks too. We used our paper folding skills to make a concertina dragon and a lucky money wallet. In Maths we looked at Tangrams and had to work out which way round to arrange the shapes to make different animals.
Week 5
This week in Lily class we have been very busy! In Maths, we have been learning about halves. We made muffin pizzas but were too hungry to cut them in half! We will cut our paper pizzas next week and learn about quarters as well. The pizzas were delicious!
In Art we designed a penguin house after looking at the design for the one at London zoo. We thought about having deep water for the penguins to dive into as well as a cosy space for a nest.
In PE we have been practising our ball skills and tried to use toe-taps and move the ball between our feet in a penguin type move.
Week 4
This week we have been enjoying the story of What the ladybird heard. We have used puppets to retell the story, using the thieves map to recreate their night time plan to steal the prize cow! In our Teacch trays we have written what the different animals might say and made a list of the animals that helped to save the cow.
In Art, we looked at Ely cathedral and the gargoyles that are on the roof. We used some clay to make our own gargoyle to frighten away the bad spirits. We didn't all like the texture of the clay and the way it made our hands messy but I think you'll agree the gargoyles look quite scary!
We have loved playing with our new water tray and easel this week. It took a lot of strength to get the water to pump but we had great fun working out how to move the water from tray to tray.
On Thursday we made our own biscuits , decorating them as ladybirds. We read the recipe and used the electronic scales to weigh the ingredients.
Week 3
This week we have been learning about measurement and capacity. After exploring pouring and filling we started to measure using millilitres. We have also been making towers taller than ourselves with the Duplo and construction bricks.
In Art we have made our own stained glass windows after looking at the Rose window in Westminster Abbey in London. We had to use our fine motor skills and patience to make our windows look beautiful.
We have also been enjoying reading stories in our book corner. We have had Winter themed stories and information books this week as well as some of our favourites; Oi Dog! and Winnie the witch in Winter.
Week 2
During this week we have been learning more about the weather and have been looking at a map of the UK. On Thursday afternoon, we became weather forecasters and pretended it was a sunny day in England! We made a simple rain gauge but found it got blown over by the wind. Our next challenge is to work out how best to make it stable and where to put it so we can see how much rain has fallen.
In our Teacch trays this week, we have been focusing on recognising and ordering numbers. Some of us have been looking at how many tens and ones are in different two digit numbers.
Week 1
It has been lovely to welcome the children back to school this week. They all seemed to have grown and settled back into our daily routines well. Who could have foreseen the snow for our first day back which tied in very nicely with our new story Ridiculous! The story tells of a tortoise called Shelley who wanted to experience what Winter was liked and ventured out into the snow. We loved playing snowballs and making snow angels at playtime as you can see from our photos. We also brought some snow into the classroom to see how long it would melt.
In Science this half term, we are learning about the four seasons and the weather, so we have really experienced how cold the Winter can be.
