Spring

Welcome to the Year 2 Class page.

Here you will find the 'Knowledge Organisers' for each subject and weekly updates on the year group's activities!
Week 1

The children have settled back in well after the break! They thoroughly enjoyed playing in the snow at breaktime on Tuesday!

In English they have been looking at portal stories. In these stories the characters go through a magic doorway and find themselves somewhere new! We have been finishing off a story about a girl who shrinks down to the size of a teacup and goes through a fairy door. The children then edited their stories to improve them!

In Maths we have been beginning to look at money. For the time being we have only been working with pence coins, using them to buy things from each other. We also have started to learn to add money together to find a total.

In Art, we have been learning about portraits and beginning to create our own. We have also been talking about being safe online. This half terms focus in Computing is on behaving the same way online that you would in real life.
Week 2

This week we have been continuing money in Maths. We are now using pounds and pence together. Year 2 children always find this hard but we have been using some tactics to make things easier. Look carefully before you start and sort them from biggest to smallest. Always count the pounds first and then the pence. Look at the signs on the coins and notes, be careful not to rush and count pennies as pounds or vice versa. Thank you for joining us for Maths on Tuesday!

In English we have started to learn our new story, The Tunnel. https://burghfield.w-berks.sch.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/the-tunnel-powerpoint1.pdf

We have been diving deeper into the backgrounds of the place that Rose finds herself in. We have written exciting sentences which bring the setting to life!

In Geography, we have been looking at the British Isles. We learned last week that this is made up of England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales. This week we dived deeper into Scotland and learned some interesting facts! I wonder if your children can remember any?

In DT, we designed our own 'moving monster.' We made sure to include linkages in our designs so that our monsters will be able to move.

The children loved practising some sea creature themed yoga poses in PE on Friday and, impressed us with their typing skills on the laptops too!
Week 3

Another busy week in Year 2!

In English, we have continued our learning based around 'The Tunnel.' The children have started to innovate parts of the story to create their own version. We have been focussing on including lots of different writing techniques.

In Maths, we began a new topic - Multiplication. The children have been practising putting objects into equal groups. We know that equal means the same in each group. We have introduced 'X' as the symbol for Multiplication and will continue learning about this in the next couple of weeks.

In Science, the children made posters for keeping safe when using electricity. They knew that they shouldn't be touching plug sockets or using electrical items without an adult's support.

The children completed their moving monsters in DT. They worked so hard to make them colourful and functional! They thoroughly enjoyed practising the Glockenspiels in Music too!
Week 4

This week, in English the children have continued innovating the story of 'The Tunnel'. They planned their stories by drawing the different parts and, then started to write them. We had some very exciting ideas- haunted houses, wolves and fairies!

In Maths, the children have continued learning about Multiplication. We have introduced 'arrays'. An array is when you arrange objects in neat rows and columns to make it easier to count. The children practised making different arrays for multiplication sentences using multilink cubes. The array below is representing 5 x 3.

The children loved making circuits in Science this week! They learnt how to connect wires to the battery and the bulb to make the bulb light up.

In PHSE, we had a lovely lesson where we talked about the children's strengths and skills. We went around the circle and everyone said something they liked about the person talking.

In Art, we continued painting the facial features and hair onto our self portraits. The children worked hard to ensure they mixed the correct colours for each part.
Week 5

The children have impressed us with their learning this week! In English, we have been discussing the features of a diary entry; a casual tone, first person, past tense. In the next week, the children will be writing their own diary entries including these features.

In Maths we have been practising using the divide symbol within number sentences. We have been dividing by 2, 5 and 10. The children learnt that divide by 2 is the same as sharing between two groups.

We continued looking at circuits and putting them together in Science this week and, in Geography the children compared Ely with Cape Town.

PHSE involved some interesting conversations where we talked about team work and why it is important. We played a game where we had to pass a ball along a circle without using our hands. This involved team work and communication.
Week 6

We are so proud of all the children for another great half term!

In English this week, the children completed a 'Hot Write' based around the story, 'The Giant Jam Sandwich.' They wrote diary entries as if they were there when it was happening. They worked incredibly hard.

We continued looking further at division and multiplication in Maths this week. We introduced the words 'double' and 'half', the children explored doubling and halving numbers and discovering that this is the same as multiplying or dividing by 2!

In Science, we talked about conductors and insulators. We experimented with some different objects around the classroom to see if they would conduct the electricity and light the light bulb. We discovered that metal objects like a spoon or pencil sharpener conduct electricity but other materials do not. These are called insulators.

We had lots of discussions this week about our mental wellbeing as it is Children's Mental Health week. We talked about all feelings being okay and different ways we can manage them.

We also completed a 'Safer Internet Day' task on Tuesday where the children wrote some rules for themselves to ensure they stay safe online.

The highlight of everyone's week was making our fruit kebabs in DT, The children carefully chopped their chosen fruit and made sure to put them on the stick in a repeated pattern.

We hope everyone has a lovely half term!
