We'll be making suggestions in our weekly updates about which activities you could try to do with your child. The activities are all free, or very low cost, and can be accessed locally. How many could you tick off the list?
Our Topic this half term is All About Me and the Knowledge Organiser give you an overview of our learning over the coming weeks. You could support your child with their learning by talking about your families, going for walks in the local community and talking about what you can see, discussing different jobs and the roles of people in the community who you help us. If you, or anyone you know, has a job which involves helping people in the local community that the children could learn about, please let us know!
Week ending Friday 18th October
A very special visitor enhanced the children's learning about people who help us this week. 'Mike the Paramedic shared pictures of the vehicles that paramedics use to get to people in an emergency and we were surprised to find out that some paramedics can even pedal a bike very fast to get to patients in big cities like London, quicker that an ambulance! Mike showed the children some of his most important pieces of equipment and spoke to the children about how he keeps himself safe whilst still helping others.
The children enjoyed pretending to be doctors, paramedics. firefighters and police officers when they were playing in the provision. They developed their fine motor skills by weaving patterns for emergency vehicles and bandaging each other and set up tracks outside for their vehicles to travel along safely.
Week ending Friday 11th October
This week has been all about where we live and the children have been very busy making, building and drawing maps. They have used their developing phonic knowledge to add labels to and applied their growing mathematical vocabulary to describe the sizes features that they created.
Maps have even featured in our Talk Through Writing session with the children contributing to and creating story maps for our innovation Owl Babies story!
Week ending Friday 4th October
The weather certainly provided lots of 'splashing good fun' for the children to enjoy this week. We discovered that we have lots of aspiring doctors, police officer, racing drivers and ice-cream sellers when we discussed what jobs we would like to do in the future and we recalled what we could do in the past when we were babies. The children think they prefer being able to do some of the many things that they can do now as they have enjoyed pedalling, pushing, pulling and climbing during their COOL time! In maths, the children have been sorting objects in lots of different ways using given criteria as well as making up their own. The children continue to learn more individual letter sounds and are practising blending sounds to read simple words.
Week Ending Friday 27th September
This week has been all about Owl Babies and finding out about our bodies!
The children had been very creative; from making playdough owls, to creating giant nests. They have been immersed in the story of Owl Babies and have been retelling the story using the repetitive phrases from the text.
The rain produced some sizable puddles which were so tempting and of course had to be jumped in! The children were still learning though as they were exploring what their bodies could do, and were able to add 'jumping' to their list. The children particularly enjoyed learning about how doctors use x-rays to detect broken bones and were keen to create their own x-ray images!
Week ending Friday 20th September
The Colour Monster has been helping the children to be able to name different feelings and identify different colours and expressions associated with them. They have enjoyed collaging monsters and made their own monsters by manipulating and decorating play dough. We all like to feel happy so the children designed their own 'happy potions' and had great fun squeezing, cutting, pouring and mixing to try and make them. The children thought carefully about how the Colour Monster might feel at different times during our school day and had some very kind and thoughtful ideas about how they could help!
Week ending 13th September
The children have completed their first week in school and we are so pleased with how well they have settled in. From making new friends, exploring new environments, attending assemblies and being independent in the dinner hall, they really have been amazing!
They have met Fred Frog and begun their reading journey in school with blending sounds, and they have been showing us their understanding of counting when they have been being 'COOL' in the provision.
