Welcome to the year 2 class page!
Here you will find regular updates of our current learning, ways to help at home and knowledge organisers for each subject. Please have a look at these updates with your child and find time to talk about the new skills and knowledge. If you have any questions or comments please feel free to come and talk to us or email the school office.
Week 1
Welcome back everyone. This week we have started lots of new units of work... exciting!
We have begun to look at how plants grow and have started a new descriptive writing piece about Smok the Dragon and the Cobbler of Krakov. We are trying to spice up our writing with lots of adjectives and similes.
In art we are studying Turner and Counstable who were famous landscape artists. We learned that Turner used to take himself out into storms on his ship to inspire his art.
Week 2
This week we have been focusing on measurement in maths.
We looked at Centimetres, Metres and compared distances. We discovered that the school playground is somewhere between 45m and 55m... (some of the children's measurements were a bit wonky!)
We created some strong cylinders from card to test their strength. Foxgloves hold the record with 39 books piled on top!
World book day was lovely! Thank you to all of the parents who came and read in the afternoon! :)
Week 3
The children have been very busy this week. One of the highlights was learning to record jokes on the program Scratch Junior. As you can imagine, there was much laughter as we listened to all the punchlines and watched as the characters on screen left the stage!
We have also been thinking about how we have grown and changed as part of our PSHE lessons. Many tales were told of losing teeth and long discussions were had about what skills we could do now that we couldn’t do as a baby.
In RE we have been learning about how many Hindus celebrate the ritual of Puja as a way of saying thanks to their gods. Hindus use all their five senses as part of this ceremony. They hear the sound of the bell, they taste the food, they smell the incense, they touch the kum kum powder and place it on their forehead and they see the murtis- pictures of their gods- on the shrine.
Week 4
This week we have celebrated Red Nose and Down Syndrome awareness day with a non-uniform and wearing odd socks day! Both Foxglove and Tulip class had great fun creating their own joke books which we hope made you laugh at home!
A couple of our favourites have to be-
What do you get when a cow goes on a trampoline?
A milkshake!!
And - What is a pirates favourite letter? ARrrrrrrrrrrgh!
In Science this week, we looked at the results of our cress experiment. We discovered that seeds can grow without light, but that they don't grow very well. Tulip class also found out that seeds need warmth to grow well and as soon as they moved their cress seeds away from by the door to a warmer place, they grew much quicker.
In Maths, the children have been continuing to learn more about measurement. This week, we focused on weighing and using grams and kilograms. Perhaps you could do some cooking and weigh out all the ingredients in grams?
Week 5
We have had another busy week in year 2.
In our PE lessons, we have been learning some tennis skills and have been practising our forehand and backhand. Our skills are improving and we have loved using the new nets and balls Mr. McCaughan has bought for the school.
In Maths, we have been learning about measurement of liquid and temperature this week. The children have been very careful to read the scales accurately.
In History we found out about the last Tudor monarch- Queen Elizabeth I. She reigned for 44 years and it is known as the Golden Age. Perhaps you could find out more about the Explorers - Columbus, Raleigh and Drake?
