Welcome to the Year 2 class pages!
Here you will find regular updates of our current learning, ways to help at home and knowledge organisers for each subject. Please have a look at these updates with your child and find time to talk about the new skills and knowledge. If you have any questions or comments please feel free to come and talk to us or email the school office.
Show and tell
We do show and tell on a Friday if we have time at the end of the day. This is only for stories of things the children have done or items that hold significant value to them. We have decided not to do toys as these can cause arguments during the day times or can make other children upset that they do not have these things.
Thank you for understanding!
Knowledge Organsisers
Please take a moment to look through and talk about the knowledge organisers with your children. This will help them to remember the things that they have learned in their lessons!
Week 1
Welcome back everyone! The children have been working hard this week in maths looking at adding and subtracting across ten for example - 25+26=
We have been adding the ones first so - 5+6=11
Then the tens 20+20=40
Then adding it all together 40+11=51
This is notoriously tricky for children of this age and if your child can crack this then they will level up their maths ability! This will help them through the year with other topics too.
In English we have been looking at traditional fairytales and more specifically Cinderella. In the coming weeks we will be writing our own versions of this classic story!
In Computing we have been looking at Algorithms which are instructions for computers. helping your child understand the vocabulary in the Knowledge Organiser will enable them to access the learning more independently.
Good work year 2, keep it up!
Week 2
This week we have been learning about the Romans and how they conquered some of Europe, South Africa and eventually England. They were very hard working and built roads, toilets and baths.
In Art we looked at the work of Matisse. We learnt that when he was too old to paint, he cut out shapes to create his artworks. We did the same and we are very proud of our pictures.
Week 3
In maths this week we have been looking at 2D shapes, describing their properties- sides and vertices as well as drawing them. Perhaps you could try drawing a pentagon, hexagon or an octagon at home?
In PSHE we have been talking about bullying and how it makes us feel. We talked with the children about the difference between being hurt or upset once or by accident and being hurt or upset by the same person again and again.
In History we loved finding out about the Roman soldiers and the weapons and tools they carried as they marched across different countries. Ask your child about the Tortoise!
Week 4
This week we have been looking at 2D shapes and lines of symmetry. We started by folding paper shapes to find the vertical and horizontal lines of symmetry. There are some good activities on Topmarks games to reinforce this week's learning.
In Science we continued to look at habitats and learnt about animals that live in a burrow or den in a woodland. Perhaps you could find out more about how Badgers and foxes look after their young in their underground homes.
week 5
What a strange but exciting week we have had! Thank you to everyone who came to the rescheduled craft afternoon on Friday. We hope you enjoyed making Christmas decorations with your child.
We have continued to learn about 3D shapes this week. Perhaps as you unpack your shopping, you can challenge your child to name all the different shaped boxes? Can they tell you the names of the faces on each box?
In English we wrote our own acrostic poem where a topic word is written down the page and the children created a poem on that theme. Acrostic poems don’t have to rhyme. Here are two great poems for you to read.
Wind blows and snow drifts to the ground
I see it on my foot
Nice hot chocolate mmmmm yummy
Trees have lost their leaves
Even the rooves are covered in snow
Ready to go outside mum? Now ready, set, go!
Who is shivering?
Is it cold and snowy, I hope so!
Now some hot chocolate
The snowy snow is dripping
Every person is shivering
Rest in bed, it’s cold outside!
